Braulic “Cabby” Caballero, 85, of Fayette died Friday, June 19, 2015 at his home in Fayette.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 23,2015, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette with Rev. James Brokman officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Oelwein with military rites conducted by American Legion Post #339 of Fayette. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Monday, June 22^nd at Becker-Milnes Funeral home in Fayette and for one hour preceding mass at the church on Tuesday. There will be a rosary recited at 4:00 p.m. and scripture service with sharing of memories at 7:00 p.m., both on Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Office of Student Development Cabby Fund at Upper Iowa University.

Braulic, son of Braulio and Anita (Ramirez) Caballero, was born March 27, 1930, in Oelwein, Iowa. He received his education in the Oelwein Public Schools, graduating in 1948 from Oelwein High School. After high school he enlisted in the United State Marine Corps, was stationed in Guam, and was discharged in 1952. He continued his education at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, graduating in 1956, and later received a MA degree from the University of Iowa in 1963.

On June 1, 1957, he was united in marriage with Patricia Louise Miller, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein. The couple made their home in Fayette. Following Patricia’s death on May 3, 1992, Cabby continued to make his home in Fayette, and continued to build a lasting legacy at Upper Iowa University. He served in many capacities at Upper Iowa and retired as Vice President of Student Affairs from the University in 1995. He also served many years on the Fayette City Council. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette, was a fifty-year member of the Fayette Lion’s Club and was a member of American Legion Post #339 of Fayette. He enjoyed playing golf and cards, had a large network of friends that he enjoyed over the years, but especially loved the time spent with his grandchildren.

He is survived by two sons, Brian (Deb) Caballero of St. Michael, Minnesota, and Michael (Andrea) Caballero of Marion; nine grandchildren, Alanna, Max, Gabriel, Sophia, Emma, Ian, Mia, Will Pat, and Anita; two brothers, Rupert (Martha) Caballero of Waukon, and Michael Caballero of Cedar Falls; a sister, Angeline Alvarez of Chicago, Illinois; a brother-in-law, Bert Maynard of Cedar Rapids; many nieces and nephews; and Earl Krone of Los Angeles, California.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ana, Esther, and Anita; two brothers-in-law, Rosando Alvarez and Clayton Wilcox; and one sister-in-law, Judy Caballero.

We lived across the street from the Caballeros in the early/mid sixties. The entire family, especially Braulic was a huge part of my childhood and I remember all of them fondly. Patricia would bring me on errands with her and I LOVED IT. I remember fighting with Mikey and Brian when I was 4 years old and it was WONDERFUL! LOL! RIP, Braulic. You are a wonderful soul and I know you are now at peace with God (and Patricia!). My dad, Phil Manning, designed some art work within the Saint Francis Church and I want to convey his sympathies to Braulic also. Peace be with you. My heart will always be in Fayette with the Caballeros living steps away from my home...

I remember playing golf with Cabby and his partner. It was a couples tournament. She kept on breaking her tees and was very upset. He said matter of factly "Last I knew, they are still making them, so no problem." I just chuckled and I think of it every time I break a tee. Your Dad and Grandfather was a wonderful man and his legacy lives on in all of you. Sorry we could not attend the wake. Love you all. Deb and Dave Boike

Marv and I thought the world of Braulic and were sorry we weren't able to know Pat. He was such a person of integrity and set a good example for all. Braulic demonstrated his love for his grandchildren by driving to watch them in their activites, even when they were very young. They absolute ONLY problem I ever had with the dear man was fighting for equal "holding time" when the grandsons were infants! The photo you've chosen is exactly how I'll remember him, glasses always sliding down his nose a bit. More importantly, I'll remember him often and count myself blessed to have known him. My condolences to you!

What a great man he was! He loved his family, town, country, Upper Iowa, and golfing. I had the honor of working for him as Secretary to the Deans as well as when he was Director of Admissions. He could do shorthand better that I could. He was my mentor. My condolences to his boys and family. I will never forget him.

Cabby was the kindest soul I have ever met! When I first stepped on the campus of UIU, I was greeted by Cabby within the first day of football practice. He took the time to find out about you as a person, student, athlete. Every time I returned to campus, Cabby knew what was happening in my life. He took the time to always keep up with my life....I know he did that for every Peacock who he met! He was "the greatest" and will be missed....Peacock Nation has lost a tremendous individual!!

He was a very nice man and helped everyone he could. I lived in Fayette from 1953 until Feb 1970 when we moved to West Union my parents were Shorty & Ella Thomas. So sorry for you loss my prayers go out to the whole family!

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of the neighborhood football games in in the backyard with every kid in the neighborhood of every age playing and Cabby as all time quarterback. You could be sure the girls had just as much fun and scored just as many amazing touchdowns as the boys did. And it was Cabby who taught me to whistle with my hands ... A skill that I retain to this day and used to call my own kids home for dinner when they were out running around the neighborhood. Mostly - Cabby was the best neighbor to my parents - JoAnn and George. We could never thank him enough for the care and support he so quietly gave every day. What a gift he was to my parents when they needed his friendship over the years. Cabby was special in every way - a gift to the Fayette community - and a presence that will be missed my so many. My heartfelt condolences to Brian, Mike and the family.
